About Toto
The group Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also highly acclaimed studio musicians who worked with Boz Scaggs at the time) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. Their name is derived from the Latin word which means "all encompassing," the group was intent on exploring all styles of music.
The third album by Toto, Turn Back, was an unfulfilling success in 1981. However, they bounced back with their fourth album, Isolation, which contained two songs that were hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and the tour helped them become a household name around the world.
After a brief hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. The album is an departure from the ballads that were featured on previous albums and includes some heavy rock. The album was their first album to go platinum in North America.
In the course of recording the band's fifth album, the band loses their manager and are faced with financial difficulties. They decide to change their name and make a new album using the new producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman and gives the band much-needed boost.
In 1999, the band release Mindfields and begins an extensive worldwide tour. After several weeks in Europe the band travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and begins recording their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band's cover of their hit Africa during a recent tour. Toto's touring group is comprised by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

The next year, Toto toured with Ringo Starr's All Starr Band. This was the final time that all the original members of Toto were on stage together. After that, the group was again disbanded. However, Toto reunited in 2010 to perform a benefit for the ALS Foundation. This was the first time all original Toto members were performing together for over 31 years. The original members were joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.
